At first glance, writing something called How to Read a Book may seem altogether obvious, and more than a little unnecessary. This book by Mortimer Adler and Charles van Doren is anything but. A classic book—first published more than 80 years ago, with an update published in 1972, this is a book that is anything but obvious. It challenges the reader to engage in self-directed learning, reading books that matter, and being able to find meaning and understanding without external guidance or direction. This is a guide to active reading, and how to fully reckon with and critique significant books. In this review, I share why the content is still relevant—even if the reading of it may present some challenges.
